8 Tips For Safety With Rotary Cutters

As the owner of an online quilt store, I recently participated in the Calhoun County Illinois Quilt show. A woman in the neighboring booth recently had suffered an injury with a "rotary cutter". Her story went as such; she was HURRYING to finish a project and placed her open rotary cutter on the ironing board. You guessed it, she knocked it off and it fell on her leg making a nasty cut. She chose not to see a doctor, which her listeners, felt was a mistake, but, instead continued to nurse and dress the wound. I might add the wound was still bleeding. This brought on war stories from her listeners. Everyone had a similar story to tell.

Her story reminded me of my friend who had also dropped an open rotary cutter on her foot. This time the cut was too severe to ignore. The attending emergency room doctor was aghast at the wound and depth of the injury - several tendons were cut. My friend produced the rotary cutter and the doctor could not believe she was in possession of so lethal a tool. The wound healed, however, the tendon damage was significant and has left her with some permanent damage.

In no way do I advocate tossing out the rotary cutter. As quilters, we know the value of this tool. However, I believe we must be aware of the importance of - SAFETY FIRST - and implement that idea into our quilting process. Every instructor I know has included in their instruction - and be sure to close the rotary cutter after each cut.

Use the following tips and stay accident free:

1. Wear shoes while cutting your fabric - keep a pair at the table for this use only.
2. Close your rotary blade after each cut - make it a HABIT.
3. Keep out of the reach of children - purchase a school pencil box and place rotary cutter in it after each cut.
4. Maintain a safety kit close to the cutting board - set up a side table for the pencil box and the safety kit.
5. Stay focused when cutting - this means turn the TV off.
6. Invest in grips to keep your hands clear of the cutting tool.
7. Always cut away from you.
8. Copy this list and tape it to your table as reminder - SAFETY FIRST.

Plasma cutters are made up of many parts which need to be inspected at regular intervals and replaced when necessary. This will keep the your cutter in a safe condition and also giving high quality cuts. In the nozzle head plasma cutters concentrate the gas and introduce a spark to turn this concentrated gas into plasma. The area around the plasma where it comes into contact with the metal is protected by inert or perhaps semi inert gases. There is sufficient force in the plasma to blow from the cut all of the molted metal. Temperatures up to 30,000oF are reached in the plasma, this combined with the force puts pressure on the nozzle head.

The parts of plasma cutters which suffer from wear and tear: the shield, nozzle, electrode, and swirl ring all will last longer with proper maintenance.

The Electrode:

The plasma arc is powered by the electrode, this is the electrode's primary function.You can detect wear by the condition of the insert and the pit depth. Cut quality is reduced and possible plasma torch damage is caused by a worn electrode. The more usual cause is wrongly matched torch parts. However gas flow set incorrectly, gas impurities, build up of moisture, and gas leaks can also contribute to electrode wear.

The Nozzle:

Plasma cutter nozzles forces the plasma gas through a narrow tube with a round hole of a specific diameter at the tip increasing its speed and force. Damage to the nozzle is caused through misuse such as having the wrong cut distance, incorrect setting of plasma cutters, using incorrect replacement parts. A regular maintenance schedule and using only original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts will prolong the useful life of plasma cutters.

The Shield:

As the name suggests the shield protects the parts of the nozzle from damage. With a hole which matches the one on the nozzle the more usual problem is damage from blocking clogging by splatter of this hole. Usually the debris or dross can be picked off however if the hole is damaged or is not longer round replacing the shield is necessary.

The Swirl Ring:

A swirling action around the electrode is created and controlled by the swirl ring. Cut quality is decreased, nozzle and electrode life is shortened when the gas flow is hampered by clogged swirl rings. With regular inspection and cleaning a swirl ring will need not be replaced through many nozzle changes.

If you were to stop the next 22 people you met and inquired as to how many could explain how carbide router bits are used, my guess is that very few would have much to say. Actually, though, these little carbide cutters are used for almost everything we use made of wood. From my desk I can see a hand rail, floor molding, window frames, window trim, a desk, a chair, several doors and more that were partially made using these woodworking tools. Think about your cabinets, dining table, end table, coffee table and so on. All these have some feature that was cut using a router bit.

In the past, cutters were made of high speed steel, and before that they must have been made of the best materials available, but I assure you, they were not very good. I know, because I have used some old ones belonging to my deceased grandfather. He left a box of tools for me to have when he passed away, and I tried to use them. They could cut wood, but not metal. And the details would wear out very quickly, simply because the steel was just not that tough. He must have known some secret speeds and feeds to use, because, compared to today's tooling, they were very inadequate. In any case, I was all to happy to come back to my own carbide cutters.

Some obvious benefits are higher speeds and feeds, finer finishes, prolonged tool life, and higher dimensional accuracy. Since the tool does not deflect during use, the results are generally excellent. This is one of the hardest materials known to man, and has so many industrial applications that it would be difficult to list them all. But, just for the sake of demonstration, here are some of the more common.

As much as possible, high speed machining is the preferred method of using carbide. It can also work well at lower speeds, but the process will suffer as a consequence. The edges are very brittle and tend to chip when used improperly. Tool and die makers, injection mold makers, and precision machinists use them on a daily basis. In fact, it is difficult to imagine returning to the old days of high speed steel. It would be worse than only having dial-up on your computer!

Remember when you were a kid and the cereal box was your morning entertainment during breakfast? You could not wait to turn the box around to see what type of games might be on the back. So many different word searches, mazes, and, if you really want to date yourself, some boxes had a real record on the back. All of those fun entertaining boxes were made from chipboard. What is chipboard? Chipboard is a mixture of recycled pressed paper. It is available in a natural tan/brown-gray color or in white. The same chipboard used in those cereal boxes years ago is used today in business, industry, manufacturing, crafts such as scrapbooking, and so much more.

Chipboard can be of great use to you around the house. Chipboard is thick so it lays flat and can be walked on. You can use it to cover the floor when you are painting a room in your home. The straight edges fit tightly up against the baseboard. The flat surface allows you to overlap them slightly to cover the entire floor. Paint droplets can be easily wiped up off the chipboard. Use your electronic die cutter to make stencils for designing your walls. It is perfect for stencils. The best thing about chipboard is that it is a thicker board and is reusable. After you are done painting, lay each board on top of each other laying them flat as you store them. You can slide them under your workbench and forget about them until the next time you want to paint.

Do you like to do your own car maintenance? Chipboard can be of great assistance to you in this area too. If you plan to change the oil in your car, purchase some chipboard for the garage too. Slide the chipboard under the engine of the car before you change the oil. If you think you may be leaking any fluid from your car, chipboard can help here too. Place a clean piece of chipboard under your car. Pull it out and check it periodically for lost fluid. The color of chipboard is light so you will be able to see if it is a tinge of red from your transmission, or bright yellow-green from radiator fluid. Oil will easily be spotted as well.

Back inside the house there are many other uses for chipboard. You can use chipboard in your electronic die cutter for all of your scrapbooking needs. Cut the board into a frame and mount it on the front of a scrapbook or photo album. Add some glue to the frame, place stuffing on the glue, add a little more glue, then cover with a craft fabric and pull it tight to cover then glue it on the back. Cut out the center of the frame and pull the fabric through the center and tightly glue to the back of the frame. Glue in place. Glue the frame onto the top of your scrapbook or photo album. Place glue only on the back of the frame on the two sides and bottom, leaving the top open to slide in your photo.

Chipboard can be decorated too. You can use paint, crayons, markers, chalk or use decoupage medium to mount a photo, tissue paper or scrapbooking paper onto the chipboard. It can make perfect art for your walls too. Cut out your child's name, decorate it, and hang it on their bedroom wall. Choose to cut a design, then decorate and mount it in a frame and hang it on your wall. The possibilities are endless. Get your imagination on!
