Since the prices of plasma cutters have been dropping steadily over the decades they are becoming more widespread and finding their way into industries that you never thought would need a plasma cutter. You may also be paying for the name of the artist if they have an established history of producing fine quality art.
I encourage you to give plasma cutter art a try. It is actually a lot of fun because you wave the plasma cutter around like wand over the metal surface (while following all safety guidelines, of course) and presto you have interesting shapes that you can weld together or bend in half or do anything you want with.
