Plasma Cutter Art

Since the prices of plasma cutters have been dropping steadily over the decades they are becoming more widespread and finding their way into industries that you never thought would need a plasma cutter. More specifically, I am talking about plasma cutter art. Long gone are the days of big, hard to handle plasma cutters. Now we have little hand held plasma cutters that can be wielded like a knife to cut through metal like butter.

Box Cutter

Contrary to what you may think, plasma cutters can produce very intricate detail. The plasma that cuts through the metal is extremely focused and does not have much kerf (the volume of metal that is destroyed in cut). This means that the artist can cut fine detail with no effort. You can think of the sheet of metal as a block of marble and the plasma cutter is the chisel. An artist can make anything they can dream of, even in 3D. The metal can be bent or melted so that certain areas bulge out or other pieces of metal can be welded on. Generally, because of the weight, metal art is not very big, but that does not mean it is not beautiful.

Box Cutter

When you shop around for plasma cutter art you will find some very steep prices. Just like a canvas and paint does not cost very much, running a plasma cutter and buying sheet metal is cheap. The value of the metal art does not come from the metal used, although metals like gold and silver could be used. Most often, the price is determined by how intricate and skillfully the design was created. You may also be paying for the name of the artist if they have an established history of producing fine quality art.

I encourage you to give plasma cutter art a try. It is actually a lot of fun because you wave the plasma cutter around like wand over the metal surface (while following all safety guidelines, of course) and presto you have interesting shapes that you can weld together or bend in half or do anything you want with.
